I paint metaphorical images using the ‘language’ of still life. Using objects in a non-literal way creates a ‘visual poetry’. To do this, I chose to work intuitively. For the most part, objects are chosen because I have a visceral response to them when I see them. I don’t always know what the metaphor is or what it means to me at that moment, but I trust my initial response and start working with the object.
Other times, I know exactly what the imagery is about the instant I see it. My hope is that whatever the symbolism of the object is, if it has a deep resonance for me, it is, in essence, universal in theme and will resonate with others as well.
